Xeren is a deity who was responsible for the creation of Euclid and all life native to it, including humans. He had little impact on his own creations compared to his interference of the natural order on the planet Eden. He lead the demon slave race in an uprising against the angels. Xeren was killed by the Powers for his slaying of another of their kind, Vritra, the god of Eden.

While Xeren's role in The Demon's Light is minor and posthumous, he has a significant role in the series' backstory. His son Cicero lead the demon invasion of Euclid in an effort to recover his soul, which prompted humanity to bring the angels to Euclid to combat them. In Season Two, Savannah Whitesmith is revealed to be an Aditya, a reincarnation of Xeren.

Appearance

Xeren is a muscular, ten-foot-tall figure, who wears a white suit of armor, with golden sashes throughout it. Most of his arms are exposed, but he partially covers them with black couters and gauntlets. Xeren's legs are covered by dark gray pants with black greaves and sabatons.

His skin is a pale white, along with his eyes, which are void of pupils. A gold-plated crown often sits upon his bald head.

Personality

Xeren had incredible conviction about the righteousness of his ideals, although his opponents considered it closer to an extreme arrogance. He strongly believed that gods should not interfere in the lives of mortals unless absolutely necessary: for this reason, he chose to participate directly in battle against the angels rather than issuing commands from afar like Vritra. When asked to reconsider by Dasim, Xeren arrogantly proclaimed that if defeated, he would simply begin the next battle with an even more powerful weapon.

Cicero was Xeren's greatest pride. He named his son as the successor to his leadership of the demon army, in spite of his very young age and the many more qualified demon commanders such as Dasim. While Xeren earnestly believed that Cicero could take to the role well, the successor position being given to a child was essentially a joke — the Power did not believe he would require a successor.

Xeren believed that the Powers would not interfere with his actions in Eden, even including the killing of Vritra, because of his high standing within the organization.

Biography

Background

Xeren created the planet Euclid and its inhabitants, but sparsely interfered in their affairs thereafter. Early humans were granted knowledge of the Powers by Xeren. Unusually for a deity, Xeren did not demand that he or any of his followers be worshiped, only recognized as a presence in the universe.

In 5946 AT, Xeren sent a telepathic message to the demon slaves of Eden, urging them to make weapons from their tools and kill their angel masters. They were told to then take refuge at Optimates Mountain. There, he would ask if any were willing to organize against Vritra and the Sabaoth organization he had established to oppose Xeren. Many stepped forward and asked for his blessing: Xeren instead clarified that he could offer them better, directly participating in their battles against the Sabaoth.

During the rebellion, Xeren took the demon woman Sospita as his concubine. She was the mother of Cicero, Xeren's son and named successor. Despite naming Cicero as his successor, Dasim was his most favored underling.

The Powers initially refused to intervene, however Xeren's eventual slaying of Vritra forced them to take action. Xeren was killed and his soul departed from his body. Half of his soul took the form of a glowing red sphere, which appeared in Euclid's atmosphere and began to orbit around the planet. Centuries later, fragments of it could still be seen streaking across the sky. The other half would be reincarnated as a mortal outwardly identical to a human, born to normal human parents.

Despite the deaths of Xeren and Vritra, the war between angels and demons continued. The deity's son Cicero sought to find the soul to empower himself and enact revenge on the Powers. After the demon army had invaded Euclid, Alchemilia Corporation opened a portal and brought the angels from Eden. Humans had looked to the angels as their saviors only to find they were indifferent to (or wholly against) the preservation of their species and civilization.

Some of Xeren's reincarnations, Adityas, could recall fragments of their past life as a deity when presented with outwardly similar situations. In "Riding the Wave," Savannah is able to see a vision of the aftermath of Xeren's defeat of Vritra upon her killing of Klaus Lempo using the same weapon in a similar manner. Adityas could gain access to Aegis-class reality manipulation abilities, akin to those of an ifrit, should they find themselves in presence of another deity. However, they rarely had this privilege as no Powers have ever appeared on Euclid following Xeren's death. Savannah was the first to awaken these abilities after meeting Tuisco in his realm, Charonium, post-mortem.
